How can I grow my hair faster?

No matter how creative you get with hairstyles, the possibilities of what you can do with your hair are limited by only by its length. If you’ve suddenly gotten sick and tired of your hair and you want it to grow NOW, there are some things you can do.  If, like many women, you’re averse to getting hair extensions, one way to grow your hair longer is to follow these suggestions.

You are what you eat

Diet plays a big role in ensuring hair growth. It’s important to eat healthy foods and balanced meals that include multivitamins and minerals. Protein is key: keratin, which makes up hair fibers, is formed by some proteins that come from your diet. Make sure you get at least one good serving of protein every day, whether it’s from scrambled eggs in the morning, a chicken salad at lunch, cashews you snack on during the day, or grilled salmon for dinner. Protein shakes are a great way to get your daily dose on the go. Taking a daily multivitamin is a good way to make sure your body and hair are getting the minerals they need.

Avoid breakage

The downside to having beautifully blow-dried, flat-ironed, or curled hair styles is the damage our hair suffers as a result. Give your hair a break by trying a no-heat hair style once a week, like an easy braid. There’s also an entire world of conditioning hair masks like Protein Rx Anti-Breakage Treatment Mask that need 10-15 minutes just once or twice a week to prevent heat damage and strengthen hair. Avoid washing your hair more than every other day – washing removes hair’s natural oils that are critical to its health.

Take care of yourself

Hair loss can be the result of anything from hormones, to a stressful situation at work, to a more serious illness. Giving yourself healthy ways to de-stress is good for your body, mind and healthy hair growth.  Get exercise for at least 20 minutes a day, even if it’s just to walk the dog or practice dance moves alone in the house . . . my favorite. Consider taking up yoga or learning to meditate, two great ways to clear your head and relax.

Steer clear of chemicals

Whether you’re coloring your hair routinely or swimming in a chlorinated pool, you’re exposing your hair to chemicals that can damage hair and weaken it. After going for a swim, make sure you completely rinse out all chlorine. If you’re a pool buff, pick up a  shampoo and conditioner created specifically to get rid of the chlorine, they work!  And if you color your hair choose products formulated specifically for hair that’s colored.

Get a trim

Though it may seem counter-intuitive, one of the best ways to keep your hair growing healthily is to trim it every so often. Cutting the ends prevents split ends, which are always bad news for growing out your hair. Try to go for a trim every 6 weeks to 2 months or so to keep your hair looking fresh and healthy while you grow it out.
The greatest virtue when growing your hair long is patience. Take care of yourself and your hair, and don’t forget all the options that exist for short hair, too. Loving and caring for your hair will get you long hair you’ll love.
